Background
The Child Development Center, Inc., began the Harbor
School in September, 1971. Students in first through eighth grade are afforded
an Individualized Educational Program with an average of 10-12 students per
class.
Harbor School recognizes that all students have specific strengths and
weaknesses that require special academic support. Understanding the child allows
Harbor School to present a curriculum that will be challenging to students at all
levels, while also giving the student the opportunity to develop effective
learning strategies. The successful development of learning strategies asset
each student in the mastery of their educational responsibilities.
Since its inception Harbor School has been dedicated to providing students a
challenging and supportive environment to remediate and develop their academic
skills. The program is designed for students with specific learning
disabilities, attention deficit disorders and those that in general need an
adaptive educational program to meet their learning needs. Harbor School is
concerned with the development of the entire student; intellectually,
emotionally and socially.
In addition to an Individualized Education Program, Harbor School is committed
to the development of self-esteem in all students. Self-esteem is the basis for
school success. It is the result of knowing oneself, having pride and respect
for oneself, and of being accepted by others.
Parent's Partners
Our program is also designed to assist parents in
understanding their child's needs and how they can be an intricate part in their
child's education. Many parents share the following "Wish List":
-
"I wish I could reach my child's teacher on a consistent
basis. "
-
"I wish someone had told me way before the report card
came home that there were problems. “
-
"I wish I knew what to do about homework"
-
“I wish the school would let me know when something
happens. "
At Harbor School, we strive to address these parental needs
and attempt to be sure that parents are not alone at home with unanswered
questions.
Harbor School is governed by the question, "Will the result benefit the
children?" - because this is the sole reason for the existence of this facility.
